Sports physiotherapy
Wat is Sports Physiotherapy and what does the Sports Physiotherapist do?
Read here:
The sports physiotherapist is a physiotherapist who has specialised in sports and athletes. After studying physiotherapy, he further trained as a sports physiotherapist. This is a 4-year study after basic physiotherapy training. As a result, he knows what demands a sport makes on the body, what exercise does to us and he knows what motivates athletes.
This enables him to advise, treat and guide you in the field of sports and health. This does not only apply in a medical setting – if the doctor refers you. You can make an appointment directly with the sports physiotherapist yourself. Which appointment or treatment is eligible for reimbursement depends on your insurance.
Novice athletes – advice and guidance
Many people want to do sports or exercise, but are not sure how. Perhaps you recognise this. Perhaps it has been a long time since you last exercised, you have gained weight over time, or it is simply not so easy to start exercising because of your disability or chronic illness.
The sports physiotherapist can help you choose an activity that suits you. He is an expert on the human body, especially when it comes to sports and exercise. He can tell you what you can do and how you can do it. In other words, he gives advice and can also guide you.
Sporters – advice and guidance
You play sport and enjoy it! You play competitively and are fanatical every match, or maybe you run twice a week for yourself with the plan to one day run a (half) marathon.
Does it ever occur to you to wonder whether you are doing well? Are you training effectively enough? Whether you drink enough while touring every Sunday morning? Does it start to dizzying you when you need to buy new running shoes and you get conflicting advice? Are you pregnant and would like to keep exercising for as long as possible?
Don’t wait until you have an injury, ask for advice if you feel ‘something’ in your shoulder with every serve. Have a look at the position of your ankles if you often limp and ask what shoes are best to wear or what brace to use.
Submit your training schedule in preparation for the marathon to the sports physiotherapist and check that you are not running too fast (or too slow!). The sports physiotherapist has a large network within sports and sports coaching. You will reap the benefits of this, as he can in turn refer you to other experts, e.g. a running shoe shop, a dietician.
Injured athletes – treatment and guidance
You are injured. That sucks! Of course you want to be back on the pitch or on the bike as soon as possible. Sports-focused treatment and counselling at the sports physiotherapist will ensure that.
Sports-minded as he is, the sports physiotherapist knows how you feel and will do everything possible to get you back on level terms as soon as possible. Of course, he will first carefully analyse what happened and treat your injury .But he will also advise you on how to stay as fit as possible during this unpleasant period. You will then fall behind as little as possible.
If your injury is complex or if the situation requires specific attention, it is good to know that the sports physiotherapist is part of a sports medical network. When necessary, he will arrange for you to see a sports doctor or another expert.
